From Screen to Stage: A Movement Built on Real Stories
In Hastings and St Leonards, a quiet but powerful movement is growing — one story, one voice, one truth at a time.
The Men’s Room project continues to challenge stigma around men’s mental health through creative, resonant storytelling. Two standout projects — the award-winning documentary Men Don’t Talk? and the live performance The Monologues of Men — are proving one thing loud and clear:
Men do talk — when we listen, give them space, and make them feel heard.
Men Don’t Talk? — A Film That Sparked Conversations
Released to critical and community acclaim, Men Don’t Talk? brings together real men sharing real stories. From experiences with depression and grief to reflections on fatherhood and silence, the film is a raw and powerful reminder that vulnerability isn’t weakness — it’s a strength.
Following multiple public screenings and a feature on BBC South East, the film has helped open up essential conversations in homes, workplaces, and support groups.
“It’s not just a film. It’s a mirror. It reflects what so many men feel but don’t know how to say.”
The Monologues of Men — Theatre That Spoke Volumes
On May 26th, 2024, a full house at the Stables Theatre bore witness to something extraordinary: men sharing their stories on stage — live, raw, and unrehearsed.
Whether performed by the writers themselves or spoken by trusted voices, each monologue peeled back the layers of silence, shame, and societal pressure. Themes ranged from childhood trauma and suicide to friendship, fatherhood, and hope.
"There was such bravery on that stage. You could feel the whole room holding each other emotionally, without even knowing it."

Why This Work Matters Now More Than Ever
In the UK, suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 50. Many still suffer in silence due to stigma, fear of judgement, or a lack of safe spaces to open up.
That’s what The Men’s Room is working to change — by fostering openness, vulnerability, and creative expression in places where it’s often least expected.
These projects are just the beginning.

Looking Ahead: Baton of Hope 2025
As the Baton of Hope national movement prepares to arrive in Hastings in September 2025, The Men’s Room will be continuing to host performances, events, and conversations designed to raise awareness and inspire change.
The message is clear: talking can save lives — and art can be the spark.
